The Lima mint was started in 1568 but, due to the abundance of silver in Potosí, it was transferred to this city in 1592. Following the scandal of the lack of weight and fineness in the Potosí mints in 1648, the Viceroy Count of Salvatierra wrote to the King in 1650 explaining the need to mint coins in Lima due to the lack of coins in the viceroyalty of Peru. Philip IV did not consider these reasons sufficient and did not authorise the request. Salvatierra's successor, Alonso Enríquez de Guzmán, Count of Alba de Liste, after listening to the councillors of the Cabildo of Lima, wrote to His Majesty on 13 September 1659 explaining the unauthorised opening of a mint in Lima which had been opened on 10 December 1658.
The assayer of these gold and silver pieces was Francisco de Villegas and they are known as "Alba de Liste" coins. Values from 1 to 8 reales were minted between 1659 and 1660. On 8th April 1660, by royal order, the Lima mint was closed, only to be reopened in 1684, during the reign of Charles II.
According to José Toribio Medina in his book on Hispano-American coinage, more than a million and a half pesos had been minted by 13 September 1659.
Finally, it should be noted that only two 8 escudos have survived to the present day, one from 1659 and the other from 1660, which are preserved in the collection of the Banco de España and are the first 8 escudos minted in the New World.. NGC-F. Est...3000,00.

Commissioned on behalf of a few silver merchants who were well aware of the benefits and prestige obtained from the possession and display of these imposing coins, a short mintage of 134 coins of this date was authorized by the King. Bold aqueduct mint mark of Segovia with pleasing surfaces. Luster on obverse.
This coin is exempt from any export license fee.
During the 17th century, the mint of the Royal Segovia Mint produced some absolutely exceptional coins, the so-called "Centenes", worth 100 escudos of gold, and "Cincuentines", worth 50 reales of silver, which have traditionally been considered commemorative coins. We also know that they were used to attract the silver arriving in Seville to the Segovia Mint, the only place where they could be minted, both legally and technically, as it was the only "industrial" mint in the Crown. Many merchants received minting licences because they were interested in minting their silver in these high values, which even seem to have circulated, albeit very exceptionally. In order to mint them, an express licence was required from the Crown, which normally detailed the amount of silver or gold authorised to be minted in these pieces.
In the case of the coin we present here, after five years without any use, on 7 November 1658 an order was given to rehabilitate the Real Ingenio de Segovia. Work began on 29 March 1659, and was completed two months later, just in time to receive a new entry of 23 kg of silver on 8 June from the merchants Juan Cruz de Gainza and Pedro Azpilicueta (they had already obtained a previous licence for the same purpose in 1651). Once the work on the smaller coins had been completed, and with the problems that this entailed during the summer months, on 21 August work began on the 50 reales, which only lasted a week due to the death of the treasurer. All the Cincuentines of 1659 have the date re-engraved, a technique that was used to avoid manufacturing new dies, which were very costly for these short mintages. The re-engraving of the rollers is the work of Alonso de Orozco, who was active from 1651 to 1659. AU/XF. Est...25000,00.

Durante el siglo XVII se labraron en la ceca del Real Ingenio de Segovia unas piezas absolutamente excepcionales, los llamados "Centenes", con valor de 100 escudos de oro, y "Cincuentines", con valor de 50 reales de plata que tradicionalmente han sido consideradas como monedas conmemorativas. También sabemos que se utilizaron para atraer la plata que llegaba a Sevilla al Ingenio de Segovia, único lugar donde podían acuñarse, tanto legalmente como técnicamente, ya que era la única ceca "industrial" de la Corona. Muchos mercaderes recibieron licencias de acuñación porque les interesaba amonedar su plata en estos altos valores, que incluso parece que llegaron a circular, aunque de forma muy excepcional. Para su acuñación era necesaria una licencia expresa de la Corona, donde normalmente se detallaba la cantidad de plata u oro que se autorizaba a acuñar en estas piezas.
En el caso de la pieza que presentamos, tras un lustro sin uso alguno, el 7 de noviembre de 1658 se dio orden de rehabilitar el Real Ingenio de Segovia. Las obras comenzaron el 29 de marzo de 1659, concluyendo a los dos meses justo para recibir una nueva entrada de 23 kg. plata el 8 de junio de los mercaderes Juan Cruz de Gainza y Pedro Azpilicueta (antes ya habían conseguido una licencia anterior con la misma finalidad en 1651). Terminados los trabajos de monedas menores, y con los problemas que eso conllevaba durante los meses de verano, el 21 de agosto comienza la labra de los 50 reales que tan solo duró una semana por la muerte del tesorero. Todos los Cincuentines de 1659 tienen la fecha regrabada, una técnica que se utilizaba para evitar fabricar nuevos cuños, muy costosos para acuñar estas cortas tiradas.
