'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Muqtadir. Second reign, AH 295-320 / AD 908-932. AR Donative Dirham (19.4mm, 2.71 g, 7h). Pictorial type. Without mint or date. Obverse: Caliph on horseback riding left, his right hand holding reins, his left hand on the hilt of a sword which hangs at his side; to either side of his head: lillah – Ja'far / Reverse: Horned bull (or zebu) kneeling to left, with hump on his back and decorated flanks; above: al-Muqtadir billah, with Brahmi legend and tamgha. Ilisch B I 1; Album 247. Near VF, some surface porosity. Very rare. This remarkable type is ultimately derived from the bull-and-horseman drachms of the Hindu Shahi dynasty, struck circa AD 850-950. Al-Muqtadir issued donatives of this type in both gold and in silver. The present coin is remarkable for preserving two Brahmi characters above the bull on the reverse, presumably taken directly from the prototype.

'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Radi. AH 322-329 / AD 934-940. AV Dinar (24mm, 3.81 g, 5h). Hims mint. Dated AH 323 (AD 934/5). Bernardi type 285 (not recorded for this mint); Album 254.1. Classical Numismatic Group, LLC - Islamic Auction 5 - Session 1 . 92
'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Radi. AH 322-329 / AD 934-940. AV Dinar (22.9mm, 4.43 g, 5h). Al-Mawsil mint. Dated AH 327 (AD 938/9). Obverse field: Abu'l-Fadl bin / amir al-mu'minin in fourth and fifth lines. Bernardi type 289 (not recorded for this mint); Album 254.2. Good VF, minor edge marks. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished and believed unique. This type, with the name of the caliphal heir Abu'l-Fadl, but without that of the chief amir, is only known for the Iraqi mints of Basra, Kufa, Wasit and Baghdad. It is unsurprising that coins of this type should also have been struck at Mosul, which is similarly located in Iraq. Bernardi records no dinars of any type for al-Radi from the mint of al-Mawsil.

'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Muttaqi. AH 329-333 / AD 940-944. AV Dinar (22.9mm, 3.74 g, 6h). Filastin mint. Dated AH 329 (AD 940/41). Obverse field: Abu Mansur bin / amir al-mu'minin in fourth and fifth lines / Reverse field: pellet below. Bernardi 308Gn (known only for AH 330); cf. Morton & Eden 107 ( 22 October 2020), lot 45 (a similar dinar of this date from Tabariya); Album 256. Good Fine, scratches in reverse field. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished and believed unique. Although his name does not appear on this coin, it was probably struck by the Ikhshidid ruler Muhammad b. Tughj. Miskawayh explains how the province of Filastin had bee ceded to the Ikhshidids in the previous year: 'In Dhu'l-Hijja of this year [AH 328], there came news that Ibn Ra'iq had dealt a blow to Abu Nasr b. Tughj, brother of the Ikhshid. Abu Nasr's followers were routed, his chief officers captured, while he himself had been killed. Ibn Ra'iq took the body, had it laid out and embalmed, and conveyed in a coffin to the dead man's brother the Ikhshid; with it he sent his own son Muzahim, bearing a letter of condolence on his brother's death and apologizing for the occurrence. Ibn Ra'iq assured the Ikhshid that he had not designed his brother's death, and was now sending his own son that the Ikhshid might retaliate upon him if he so desired. The Ikhshid received this proceeding favourably, bestowed a robe of honour upon Abu'l-Fath Muzahim, and sent him back to his father. They arranged terms of peace whereby Ibn Ra'iq was to cede Ramlah to the Ikhshid, but was to retain the rest of Syria, and receive from the Ikhshid for the cession of Ramlah 140,000 dinars.' 'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Muttaqi. AH 329-333 / AD 940-944. AV Yamini Dinar (17.8mm, 1.85 g, 6h). San'a mint. Dated AH 332 (AD 943/4). Bernardi 307El (this date not recorded); Album 1060. Near EF, pin-marks in fields on obverse. Excessively rare, apparently an unpublished date. Virtually no 'pure 'Abbasid' dinars (i.e. those which name only the caliph, without any other local ruler) were struck in the year AH 332. The only exceptions, both excessively rare, come from the Arabian mints of Baysh and San'a.

'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Muttaqi. AH 329-333 / AD 940-944. AV Donative Dinar (23.8mm, 4.77 g, 6h). Medallic type with broad margins. Madinat al-Salam mint. Dated AH 333 (AD 944/5). Obverse field: citing Abu Mansur bin / amir al-mu'minin in fourth and fifth lines / Reverse field: ibriz below name of caliph. Cf. Bernardi 308Jh (a standard dinar, without broad margins, and without ibriz below reverse field); cf. Morton & Eden auction 14 (25-26 May 2005), lot 581 (a medallic donative of al-Basra with similar legends, dated AH 330). Good VF, traces of past mounting on edge, centres slightly softly struck. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished and believed unique.

'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Muti'. AH 334-363 / AD 946-974. AV Dinar (23.5mm, 2.80 g, 11h). Surdud mint. Dated AH 339 (AD 950/51). Annulet below obverse field; letter ﺡ below reverse field. SICA 10, 186; Album 1062. EF. Excessively rare.
Classical Numismatic Group, LLC - Islamic Auction 5 - Session 1 . 97
'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Muti'. AH 334-363 / AD 946-974. AR Donative Dirham (22.9mm, 1.29 g, 2h). Without mint or date. Obverse field: billah / al-Muti' / lillah / Reverse field: Amir / al-mu'- / minin. Cf. Morton & Eden auction 69 (10 April 2014), lot 83; Album 265 (standard dirhams of this caliph). VF, portion of edge repaired and minor losses. Extremely rare. Al-Muti' was raised to the caliphate by the Buwayhids, who deposed and blinded his predecessor, al-Mustakfi. Constantly under the 'protection' of the Buwayhids, his influence was largely confined to religious matters and his secular power was negligible Donative issues in his sole name which do not mention his Buwayhid overlords, such as the present piece, are therefore very rare.
