Umayyad Caliphate, Silver coinage. AR Dirham (26mm, 2.69 g, 7h). Tustar mint. Dated AH 79 (AD 698/9). Klat 196 (same obverse die); al- 'Ajlan p. 92, no. 21. Minor graffiti in fields. VF, lightly toned. Excessively rare. Tustar, the modern Shushtar, was located in Khuzistan, about sixty miles north of Ahwaz. It was watered by the Dujayl river, and mediaeval accounts speak of it as being surrounded by gardens where fruit including grapes, oranges, dates, pomegranates and pears grew plentifully. Tustar was also the location of the celebrated Band-i Kaisar, a dam and arched bridge built across the river in Sasanian times. Its name, which translates as 'Caesar's Dam', refers to a tradition that this remarkable structure was built by Roman prisoners of war captured after the defeat of Valerian by Shapur I in AD 260.

Umayyad Caliphate, Silver coinage. AR Dirham (24.5mm, 1.84 g, 1h). Harat mint. Dated AH 80 (AD 699/700). Obverse field: without Pahlawi mint-name below / Reverse: margin ends al-mushrikn. Klat –; al-'Ajlan -. Clipped. Fine. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished. The first years of minting post-reform Umayyad dirhams at Harat seem to have been somewhat chaotic. Dirhams struck in the year AH 79 have standard legends and the normal five small annulets on the obverse, but we have examples on which the mint-name is variously misspelled as 'Ahbahr' (with the letters of the mint-name engraved in reverse order) and 'Hr' (with the final two letters omitted). Those coins on which the name is correctly engraved, however, inexplicably have seven annulets on the reverse, while 'Ahbahr' and 'Hr' have the normal five. Equally inexplicably, in AH 80 it was evidently decided to add the Pahlawi mint-signature below the obverse field, as was standard on dirhams struck at Marw and Marw al-Rudh between AH 79 and AH 84, while retaining the unusual extra annulets in the reverse border.

Umayyad Caliphate, n/a. Silver coinage. n/a. n/a. AR Pattern or Trial (18mm, 6.58 g, 12h). Without mint or date. Obverse: la ilaha illa / Allah wahdahu / la sharik lahu, five simple annulets in outer margin, double linear border around field and outer margin / Reverse: Muhammad / rasul / Allah, five simple annulets in outer margin, double border of dots around field and outer margin. Unpublished. Test marks on edge and below reverse field. VF. Apparently unpublished and believed unique. This enigmatic piece could be Umayyad or early 'Abbasid. The presence of Muhammad rasul Allah on the reverse recalls early 'Abbasid dirhams, but the five plain annulets are a characteristic of Umayyad post-Reform silver, and are also occasionally found on Umayyad fulus. Its status is unclear, but it has been carefully made on an exceptionally thick flan (2.4mm) and was presumably intended as a pattern or trial of some kind. Both test marks suggest that the piece is made of solid silver.
