'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Muqtadir. AH 295-320 / AD 908-932. AV Dinar (22.7mm, 2.78 g, 2h). Posthumous Issue. 'Athar mint. Dated AH [3]25 sic. Single marginal legends with mint and date on obverse and Qur'an ix, 33 on reverse; broad plain border around fields containing small cross at 6h / Abu'l-'Abbas bin - amir al-mu'minin in bottom lines of reverse and obverse field. Cf. Bernardi 249Eo (dated AH 319, without crosses). Good VF. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished and believed unique. The century is missing from the date legend (probably because of lack of space), but the unit and decade are unambiguous and clearly read khams wa 'ashrin wa. The presence of the conjunction wa provides further confirmation that the decade must be '20' rather than '10', giving a date five years after al-Muqtadir's death. The legends on this remarkable coin are otherwise fully literate and stylistically extremely close to similar dinars dated AH 319 (Bernardi 249Eo). No explanation has been offered for the presence of the two small crosses in the plain bands between the fields and marginal legends.
