'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Mu'tadid. AH 279-289 / AD 892-902. AV Dinar (23.5mm, 3.24 g, 12h). Wasit mint. Dated AH 288 (AD 900/1). Bernardi type 211 (this mint not recorded); cf. 'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Mu'tadid. AH 279-289 / AD 892-902. AV Dinar (24.1mm, 4.41 g, 7h). Amid mint. Dated AH 289 (AD 901/2). Cf. Bernardi type 211 (where this mint is not recorded); Album 241. Good VF. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished. Amid is one of the rarest mints for 'Abbasid gold, and Bernardi records examples from jusr four years: AH 291, 292, 293 and 311. The present coin appears to be the only known example from the reign of al-Mu'tadid and is also the earliest known gold coin from the mint.

'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Mu'tadid. AH 279-289 / AD 892-902. AR Donative Dirham (25.5mm, 2.95 g, 11h). Medallic type with broad margins. Amid mint. Dated AH 286 (AD 899). Obverse margin: bismillah duriba bi-Amid sanat fathuha wa huwa sitt wa thamanin wa mi'atain. Cf. Album 242M; cf. Leu auction 7 (24 October 2020), lot 2075 (standard dirhams with similar legends). Minor spotting on reverse. Superb EF. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished as a donative and believed unique. This handsome presentation dirham was doubtless struck to mark al-Mu'tadid's capture of the city of Amid in AH 286. The siege is described in some detail by al-Tabari: In Rabi II, 286 al-Mu'tadid billah had reached Amid and encamped with his soldiers to lay siege to the city. Muhammad b. Ahmad b. 'Isa b. Shaykh had locked the gates of the city of Amid against him and against his partisans in it. Al-Mu'tadid had distributed his armies around the city and laid siege to the inhabitants. This took place late in the second half of Rabi I, 286. Following that, battles broke out between them. Mangonels were set up against the inhabitants of Amid who in turn set up mangonels on their wall, and they bombarded each other. On Saturday, Jumada I 19, 286 Muhammad b. Ahmad b. 'Isa sent word to al-Mu'tadid seeking guarantees of safe-conduct for himself, his family, and the inhabitants of Amid. Al-Mu'tadid granted that to him. On the same day, Muhammad b. Ahmad b. 'Isa with his men and allies left and went to al-Mu'tadid. The Caliph bestowed robes of honour upon him and his ranking men...On Jumada I 25, 286, a1-Mu'tadid's dispatch reporting his conquest reached Madinat al-Salam, whereupon it was read from the pulpit in the Friday Mosque. Al-Mu'tadid stayed on in Amid for the remainder of Jumada I and through twenty-three days of Jumada II. On Saturday, Jumada II 22, 286 he travelled from Amid to al-Raqqah. In his place at Amid, he left his son 'Ali with troops that he had attached to him in order to secure the region and establish administrative control of Qinnasrin and the fortified cities as well as Diyar Rabi'ah and Diyar Mudar...Al-Mu'tadid ordered the destruction of the wall of Amid, and a portion of it was destroyed, while the rest could not be destroyed and was left intact. (Al-Tabari 2186-2188, slightly abridged from Rosenthal, Frank, The History of Al-Tabari, Volume XXXVIII: The Return of the Caliphate to Baghdad, New York, 1985).

'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Muqtadir. AH 295-320 / AD 908-933. AV Dinar (25.2mm, 4.08 g, 5h). Al-Muhammadiya mint. Dated AH 302 (AD 914/5). Bernardi 302Mh (this date not recorded); cf Miles, Rayy 149 (dated AH 301). Good Fine. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished. While Miles records standard 'Abbasid dinars from al-Muhammadiya for the years AH 301 and 303, the only gold coin known to him dated AH 302 additionally bore the name of Muhammad b. 'Ali, the Sa'lukid governor of Rayy who held the city at various times between AH 302 and 314. It is recorded that Muhammad b. 'Ali led an army from Rayy in AH 301 or 302 (our sources are inconsistent) against an 'Alid rebel, al-Hasan b. 'Ali al-'Utrush, but was defeated and forced to return to Rayy. Whether the present coin, which is purely 'Abbasid in its legends, was struck during Muhammad b. 'Ali's absence on campaign or in the aftermath of his defeat is not clear, but when writing about the dinar dated AH 303 Miles comments: 'There is no record in the chronicles of Rayy having been reoccupied by the central 'Abbasid authorities, but this would seem to have been the case, if we are to judge by the numismatic evidence.'

'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Muqtadir. AH 295-320 / AD 908-933. AV Dinar (22.3mm, 4.39 g, 10h). Ardabil mint. Dated AH 316 (AD 928/9). Obverse field: annulet and letter fa / la ilaha illa Allah / wahdahu la sharik lahu / Abu'l-'Abbas bin / amir al-mu'minin / letter ha; pellet to left and right / Reverse field: annulet below. Vardanyan 89 (citing a single example); Bernardi -. Edge split, minor deposit. VF. Excessively rare, apparently only the second published example. This dinar dates from the brief period after the death of Yusuf b. Diwdad in AH 315 and the formal appointment of al-Fath b. al-Afshin, as governor of Armenia in the following year. It is possible that the letters f and h above and below the obverse field represent the first and last letters of al-Fath's name, although dinars of this mint and date which bear al-Fath b. al-Afshin's name in full are also known (Vardanyan 90; Bernardi 253Ka). Something similar may be seen on Ziyarid gold dinars issued at Mah al-Basra, where examples dated AH 322 bear the full name of Mardawij b. Ziyar, while coins dated AH 318 have the letters m-r only. Might these both be a case of a ruler using initials to indicate de facto control of a mint, while waiting until his authority had been formally confirmed before using his full name on the coinage?
