KINGS of PAEONIA. Patraos. Circa 335-315 BC. AR Tetradrachm (23mm, 12.43 g, 7h). Astibos or Damastion mint. Laureate head of Apollo right / Warrior on horse rearing right, thrusting spear at enemy below who defends with shield; monogram behind horse's rear legs. Cf. Paeonian Hoard II 392/434 (same obv./rev. dies); HGC 3, 148 corr. (some with control marks). Toned, a little off center, light scuff and slight die shift on obverse, minor die break on reverse. Thessalos, nude but for chlamys billowing behind him, his petasos having fallen off, holding a band around the head of a bull left / Bridled horse prancing right within incuse square. Rogers 321; BCD Thessaly II 405.5; HGC 4, 15. Dark green patina, some roughness, die break on obverse. VF. Rare.
THESSALY, Mopsion. Circa 350-300 BC. Æ Trichalkon (21.5mm, 9.89 g, 12h). Laureate head of Zeus facing slightly right; [vertical thunderbolt to right] / The Lapith Mopsos, nude, standing facing, head right, about to strike with [club] a centaur rearing left, holding [above head a boulder which he is about to hurl]. Rogers 412; BCD Thessaly II 484; HGC 4, 537. Dark green patina, roughness, some smoothing, struck with heavily worn dies (broken at peripheries). Good VF. Mopsion, a small town situated on a hill between Larissa and Tempe, was named after Mopsos, the son of Amphykos. He was gifted with the power to understand the speech of birds, and traveled with Jason and the Argonauts as their seer. Mopsos met his death in Libya when he was bitten by a poisonous serpent that had sprung from the blood of Medusa's head.

AKARNANIA, Echinos. Circa 345-300 BC. AR Stater (21mm, 8.37 g, 7h). Pegasos flying right / Helmeted head of Athena right; hook and E to left. Pegasi 1 var. (Pegasos left); BCD Akarnania 169–70 var. (same); HGC 4, 806 var. (same); Bertolami Fine Arts 37, lot 126 (same dies). Iridescent tone, some die wear, a couple minor flan flaws on obverse, slight die shift on reverse. Good VF. Extremely rare with Pegasos right; only the Bertolami piece in CoinArchives, none in the published references.
