Only one series of portrait coins was struck for Caligula when he and Tiberius Gemellus, the alleged grandson of Tiberius, were heirs-apparent to the throne. During this period, both young men were residing with Tiberius on Capri. Not only did they have to contend with the cruelties recorded by Seutonius, but they were aware that only one of them could rise to the purple after Tiberius’ death.
