ITALY, Papal (Papal state). Clement VII. 1523-1534. AV Ducato papale (23mm, 3.46 g, 12h). Modena mint. Bust left, wearing mantum decorated with medallion of Sts. Peter and Paul / St. Geminianus seated facing, holding crozier and raising hand in benediction; in exergue, two coats-of-arms, the left surmounted by tasseled gallero. MIR 846/1; Muntoni 111; Berman 882; Friedberg 406. Slight flat strike on reverse. Good VF. Extremely rare. A wonderfully detailed portrait, particularly in the pontif's regalia. Certainly the work of a master engraver. The nephew of Lorenzo il Magnifico (the magnificent) and cousin of Pope Leo X, Clement VII wavered between alliances with France and the Holy Roman Empire, which led to the sack of Rome by imperial troops in 1527. On account of this attack, he grew a beard, in defiance of Church canon, to show his mourning. He kept the beard, a tradition continued by the following 24 Popes, up to his death. Clement VII also strained relations with England when he refused to annul the marriage of Henry VIII to Catherine of Aragon, ultimately causing the break of England from Rome and the advent of the Church of England.

This growth brought France into conflict with not only the Dutch Republic, but the vast Holy Roman Roman Empire. To these belligerents were added England, Spain, and Savoy into a Grand Alliance. Yet over nine years of fighting, neither side was able to score a decisive victory, and by 1697 all were willing to begin negotiations. This coin commemorates the Treaty of Rijswijk, that brought an end to the fighting, but mostly reset the map of Europe to its pre-war borders. The reverse design, a scene of Noah's ark and the dove of peace, recalls the covenant God made with Noah after the flood. Of course, the crowned heads of Europe were not as steadfast as the Almighty in adhering to their covenant, and within a few years the continent would again be wracked with war.

Ex Numismatica Genevensis SA 14 (15 November 2021), lot 350 (hammer CHF 26,000).Frederick II Hohenstaufen, "Stupor Mundi" (Wonder of the World), was the most enlightened ruler of medieval Europe. Besides encouraging the study of both the ancient and natural worlds, Frederick was instrumental in improving relations with the Muslims, negotiating free access to Christian holy sites in Palestine, where all Crusader armies had been unsuccessful. One of his innovations was a gold coinage comparable in style and quality to the gold of the ancient Caesars. The classical motifs proclaimed his inheritance of the legacy of Rome, and the augustale and its fractions were issued concurrently with the publication of the Constitution of Melfi, his codification of Norman law meant to follow the famous Roman law codes. These coins were struck until Frederick's death in 1250, and may have been continued by his successors for about another fifteen years.

An impressive large-format multiple of the iconic Venetian zecchino. Ex Gorny & Mosch 277 (20 April 2021), lot 1796 (hammer €17000).Ludovico Manin was the 120th and last Doge of Venice. Although born in Venice to a noble family (his father was Doge Ludovico III Alvise), he spent his early life and public career in other Italian cities. Elected Doge in 1789, his term was troubled by the decline of Venice's finances and navy. Large gold multiples such as this were intended to be sold to wealthy citizens at above gold "face value" in order to raise money for the government. However much was raised, it was not enough to face the threat of Napoleon Bonaparte, whose war against Austria spilled into Italy in 1796. Doge Manin tried to remain neutral, but Napoleon sent troops and ships into Venice and demanded its surrender in April, 1787. Manin abdicated on May 12, ending the line of Doges that stretched back over a thousand years to AD 726.

ITALY, Venezia (Venice). Coinage for Candia (Crete). Æ Cavallina da 10 perperi (23mm, 2.18 g, 10h). Dated 1572. Lion of St. Mark left, head facing, resting paw on gospel; tower to left / ÆS/ ARGE/NI/ X. Cf. Paolucci, Zecca 873 (for 1573 dated issue); Papadopoli p. 558, 86-7 (for 1571 and 1573), otherwise unknown with this date. Brown surfaces, edge split, pock marks, wavy flan. VF. Extremely rare. In 1570, Ottoman sultan Selim II invaded the Venetian-held island of Cyprus. Ballooning military expenditures for the defending forces resulted in a drain specie from Venetian Crete and caused a major monetary crisis. The Venetian administrator-General Marino Cavalli took action and overstepped his authority, striking not only the torensi and sesini authorized by the central government, but also perperi and "Cavalline," a new denomination that soon took on its issuers name. Valued at 10 perpari (ie, hyperpera), this exceptional issue was struck in bronze, but intended to serve in the marketplace in lieu of silver, as indicated by the reverse legend "æs argeni X." The issuance of a wholly fiduciary coinage was remarkable at this point in history with over 190,000 ducats worth struck, but it was not intended as a long term solution. In July 1573, Venetian authorities in Crete began the process of withdrawing the coins from circulation, exchanging them for their full stated value in current specie. The process was broken down into two steps, with smaller holdings redeemed first, followed by larger. This extremely rare coinage was issued from 1571 to 1573, though until recently none had been discovered bearing the 1572 date.

MALTA, Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Luis Mendez de Vasconcellos. Grandmaster, 1622-1623. AR Leeuwendaalder (40mm, 27.03 g, 3h). Coat-of-arms of Luis Mendez de Vasconcellos countermarked on a 1609 Dutch Leeuwendaalder of Friesland, with official test cut and snick at edge. Unpublished in the standard references. For general discussion on Maltese countarmarks, see: Gatt p. xx and online addendum. For host coin: CNM 2.16.45. Scattered marks, worn reverse die. Host Good Fine. Countermark VF. Extremely rare – the first recorded countermark of this Grandmaster. Recently discovered in a lot of silver coins of a similar age, this Lion Daalder bears the edge cuts and countermark typical of the rare Crown or Taler size issues of the Knights of St. John in Malta from the early seventeenth century. The countermark on this piece displays the coat-of-arms of Grand Master Luis Mendes de Vasconcellos. A Portuguese nobleman, de Vasconcellos had a long and distinguished diplomatic and military career for the Order before becoming governor of Portuguese Angola in 1617. He was appointed the 55th Grand Master of the Order in 1622 but died after only six months of taking up office. Consequently all coins of his Grand Mastership are rare. Prior to this discovery, countermarked crown-sized issues were known for only three grandmasters: Alof de Wignacourt, Antoine de Paule, and Jean-Paul Lascaris Castellar. All are very rare, with Gatt recording only 43 in his online addendum. No countermarked coins for De Vasconcellos have previously been recorded.
