Obverse: sikka mubarak padshah Ghazi Nadir Shah / Reverse: duriba Muhammadabad Banaras julus sanat 'ahd wala. Cf. Album 2746 (with couplet obverse); cf. Baldwin's 71 (29 September 2011), lot 1434. Drill marks in fields both sides and two small test cuts on edge. VF. Extremely rare. In AD 1739 Nadir Shah's army defeated the Mughals at the battle of Karnool before marching on Dehli. There, they were met by the Mughal emperor, Muhammad Shah, who accompanied them into the city. Nadir had the khutba read in his name and also ordered for coins to be struck in his name (dated AH 1151 and 1152). He did not depose Muhammad Shah but looted the city and made it known that he expected tribute from the Mughal provincial governors. Coins naming Nadir Shah are accordingly known from the mints of Ahmadabad, 'Azimabad (Patna), Murshidabad and Muhammadabad Banaras. All are extremely rare.

Ottoman Empire. Mehmet V Reshad. AH 1327-1336 / AD 1909-1918. . A pair of steel coin dies, apparently prepared to make jewellery imitations of monnaie de luxe 250-kurush of Mehmet V. Dually dated AH 1327 and RY 5. Obverse die: similar to the dies for the official monnaie de luxe 500-kurush, with toughra above trophy-of-arms / Reverse die: as standard monnaie de luxe 250-kurush (KM 783). Each die approximately 59mm diameter and 32mm thick, tapering slightly to a polished and engraved face approximately 42mm across. Good VF. Extremely rare and unusual.

Ex Triton XXIV (19 January 2021), lot 1280.A Gujarati slave of Qutb al-Din Mubarak who converted to Islam, Khusru rose to become the most powerful man in the Sultanate. In a remarkable display of ambition and ingratitude, he used his power to have the Sultan assassinated, putting an end to the Khilji Dynasty in Dehli. During his four-month reign, Khusru gained a reputation as a reformer opposed to strict religious laws, but this swiftly turned the nobility against him. He was defeated in battle later in AH 720 and his vanquisher, Ghazi Malik, duly became Sultan in his place, assuming the title Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq and founding a new dynasty in Dehli.
