ISLANDS off THRACE, Thasos. Circa 90-75 BC. AR Tetradrachm (30mm, 16.63 g, 12h). Head of young Dionysos right, wearing ivy wreath with small M between the grape bunches above his brow / Herakles standing facing, head left, holding club in right hand, lion skin draped over left arm; monogram to inner left. Prokopov, Silberprägung, Group XIV, 1105–7 var. (V CD4/R – [unlisted rev. die]); Le Rider, Thasiennes 52; HGC 6, 359; ANS inv. 1948.19.587 (same obv. die). Toned, scratches, a couple of patches of find patina on obverse. VF. Ex Lanz 155 (10 December 2012), lot 155. Lot includes a David Sear certificate of authenticity. The small M between the grape bunches is quite unusual element added to the standard design, and is not mentioned in any of the references. The style of the engraving of the obverse, when compared to contemporary dies in Prokopov, is clearly of a higher degree of quality, such that one wonders whether the M is actually the mark or signature of a master engraver?
