'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Rashid. AH 170-193 / AD 786-809. AV Dinar (17.3mm, 4.04 g, 11h). Without mint-name (struck in Egypt). Dated AH 176 (AD 792/3). Citing Musa in fourth line of reverse field. SICA 3, -; Bernardi 65; Album 218.7 (this date not listed). Edge smoothed. Good Fine. Excessively rare. From the collection of the late Dr. M.F.W. Al-Katib.The name on the reverse of this coin is that of Musa b. 'Isa, who held the governorship of Egypt on three occasions between AH 170-180. Bernardi records a single dinar dated AH 176 which bears Musa's name, held in the American Numismatic Society (ANS 1951.174.4), who apparently described it as a 'contemporary or modern counterfeit'. The present specimen is unquestionably genuine, and is thus the first confirmed dinar from the year AH 176 which names Musa.
