Sydenham and Crawford surmised that this reverse imitated the "elephant trampling serpent" denarius type of Julius Caesar, struck circa 49-48 BC but Haselgrove has studied the archaelogical context of the type, and the evidence suggests that the circulation peaked significantly earlier, circa 100-50 BC.

Diademed and draped bust of Artemis right, bow and quiver over shoulder / Lion standing left, raising foreleg; Π between hind legs, Δ below belly, Φ below raised foreleg. F&P DRM-41-39. A little off center, area of flat strike. Good VF.

LUCANIA, Herakleia. Circa 340-330 BC. AR Diobol (12mm, 0.93 g, 7h). Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with Skylla throwing a stone / Herakles standing facing, head right, holding grounded club and bow, lion skin draped over arm; to left, Nike flying right, crowning him with wreath, above [E]Y; Σ to inner right. Van Keuren 78; HN Italy 1381. Toned, some roughness, flan flaws, minor scratches. VF.
LUCANIA, Metapontion. Circa 340-330 BC. AR Nomos (21mm, 7.94 g, 3h). Wreathed head of Demeter left / Grain ear with leaf right; kerykeion to left, ΛY to lower left.
