KINGS of LYDIA. Kroisos. Circa 564/53-550/39 BC. AR Forty-eighth Stater (5mm, 0.16 g). Sardes mint. Head of lion right / Incuse square. Kurth S13; Berk –; SNG Ashmolean –; SNG Tatiṣ 920 (uncertain Western Asia Minor). Toned, compact flan. VF. Although not originally recognized as issues of Kroisos, the lion on this piece has a style that is identical to that found on the coins of that king, and the weight of this piece (and others like it) would conform to forty-eighth staters in his coinage. It appears that this type, like the traditional lion-bull Kroiseids, was continued under the Persians, as some examples also exhibit the highly stylized form of lion: cf. CNG 103, lot 300, and CNG E-392, lot 283.
CARIA, Antioch ad Maeandrum. Early-Mid 1st century BC. AR Drachm (16mm, 3.59 g, 12h). Stephanophoric type. Euni(kos) I, magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo right; [bow and quiver to left] / Zebu bull lying left on ground line above maeander pattern; ANTIOXEΩ[N] above, EVNI below; all within wreath. Thonemann Group C, 15b–g (o11/r10); HN Online 1545. Toned, flan crack, porous. VF. Extremely rare, six noted by Thonemann (three of which are in public collections), two additional in CoinArchives.
CARIA, Mylasa. Circa 300 BC. AR Drachm (17.5mm, 4.07 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; [monogram in left field], EY below throne. Price 2479; Thompson, Alexandrine, Group 1, 3–4. Lightly toned, faint scratches, slightly off center on reverse. VF.
CARIA, Uncertain ('Mint E'). Circa 380-340 BC. AR Diobol (9.5mm, 1.24 g, 6h). Bare head of bearded male right / Forepart of bull left, [Ǝ (= Carian "Y") on shoulder]. Konuk, Coin M48; HN Online 1707.1 = CNG E-248, lot 160 (same dies). Toned, porous, off center and area of weak strike on reverse. VF. Rare.
LYCIA, Phaselis. Circa 218/7-186/5 BC. AR Tetradrachm (32mm, 15.33 g, 11h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Dated CY 11 (211/0 BC). Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, IA (date) above Φ. Heipp-Tamer 226–8 and 233 (unlisted dies); Price 2849; DCA 315. Underlying luster, light scratches, small deposit on obverse. Good VF. From the D.K. Collection.
LYCIAN LEAGUE. Circa 35-30 BC. AR Hemidrachm (17mm, 12h). Masikytes mint. Head of Apollo right, wearing tainia / Cithara; ΛYKIΩN above, M-A/ΣI across; all within incuse square. PAMPHYLIA, Aspendos. Circa 465-430 BC. AR Stater (17.5mm, 10.85 g). Warrior advancing right, holding shield and spear / Triskeles within incuse square. SNG BN –; cf. SNG von Aulock 4482–3; cf. SNG Copenhagen 175; CNG E-451, lot 146. Lightly toned, struck with worn dies, flan flaw on obverse. Overstruck on an stater from an uncertain mint in southern Asia Minor, with types: crenelated city wall with three towers / Forepart of bull advancing right (cf. CNG 109, lot 190). VF.
CILICIA, Mallos. Circa 390-385 BC. AR Stater (18mm, 11.06 g, 4h). Winged male figure advancing left, holding solar disk with both hands / Swan standing left; on its back, an eagle stands left, preening it; [MAP to left]; all within shallow incuse circle. CNG E-448, lot 174 (same dies); Roma XVI, lot 322 (same dies [hammer £2200]); otherwise unpublished. Off center. Good VF. Very rare. From the D.K. Collection. KINGS of GALATIA. Amyntas. 36-25 BC. Æ (18.5mm, 3.18 g, 11h). Uncertain mint in Galatia, Pisidia, or Lykaonia. Draped bust of Artemis right, bow and quiver over shoulder / Stag standing right. Arslan, Coins K9; HGC 7, 784; RPC I 3503. Rough green-brown patina. Near VF. In 37/6 BC, Antony awarded Galatia to Amyntas, who continued to rule until his death in 25 BC. Artemis' features here resemble those of Kleopatra VII of Egypt, possibly as a sign of deference to Antony and the Egyptian queen.
