More tantalizingly, the letters could be interpreted as representing Provisional Government, which would make this the sole coin of the short lived entity that governed the islands from the overthrow of the monarchy on 17 January 1893 to the establishment of the Republic on 4 July 1894. However, this cataloger is not aware of any contemporary evidence to support that theory. Description

James Dodd was an Irish strongman known for juggling cannonballs when he first visited Honolulu with the circus in 1867. He would return a few years later and join the police force, becoming the city’s first white captain in 1875, an office he held only shortly before setting himself up as a hotelier in 1878. He would operate the Pantheon Saloon from then until his death in 1900. Dodd’s Pantheon Saloon tokens tokens were manufactured by C.A. Klinker & Co. in San Francisco, likely around 1893. Description

The 10,000 acre plantation would operate until 1995. In 1997, soil sampling at the company’s former pesticide mixing plants uncovered high concentrations of pentachlorophenol and dioxin. Environmental restoration of the site is ongoing. Description
