The P G countermark on across the obverse field most likely represents an unknown individual’s name, as is commonly found on many late 19th century coins. More tantalizingly, the letters could be interpreted as representing Provisional Government, which would make this the sole coin of the short lived entity that governed the islands from the overthrow of the monarchy on 17 January 1893 to the establishment of the Republic on 4 July 1894. However, this cataloger is not aware of any contemporary evidence to support that theory. Description
