The P G countermark on across the obverse field most likely represents an unknown individual’s name, as is commonly found on many late 19th century coins. More tantalizingly, the letters could be interpreted as representing Provisional Government, which would make this the sole coin of the short lived entity that governed the islands from the overthrow of the monarchy on 17 January 1893 to the establishment of the Republic on 4 July 1894. However, this cataloger is not aware of any contemporary evidence to support that theory.

James Dodd was an Irish strongman known for juggling cannonballs when he first visited Honolulu with the circus in 1867. He would return a few years later and join the police force, becoming the city’s first white captain in 1875, an office he held only shortly before setting himself up as a hotelier in 1878. He would operate the Pantheon Saloon from then until his death in 1900. Dodd’s Pantheon Saloon tokens tokens were manufactured by C.A. Klinker & Co. in San Francisco, likely around 1893.

Many Hawaiian plantations used numbered tags (bango in Japanese) to track their workers. Many of the workers were Japanese or other immigrants, and the experience, while convenient for administration, must have been dehumanizing.

Established in 1909, the Maui Pineapple Company was a major producer of the fruit until they closed in 2009, unable to match the lower labor costs in foreign markets.
