Pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear over shoulder and shield / Roma seated facing, holding spear, and Constantinopolis seated left, holding scepter and resting foot on prow, supporting between them a shield inscribed VOT/ XXX/ MVLT/ XXXX in four lines; *//•KONS(TAN). RIC VIII 238; Depeyrot 7/1. Toned, ex-jewelry, trace deposits. VF. Very rare. R3 in RIC VIII. Only five noted in Depeyrot’s 2004 corpus, three of which are in museum collections.

Valens. AD 364-378. Æ (22.5mm, 4.27 g, 12h). Constantinople mint. Struck circa March AD 368. Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust left / Two-turreted camp gate, open doors; S above; COMTM. Cf. RIC IX 40 (for similar issue); cf. LRBC 2089 (same); cf. Depeyrot p. 236, 25-6 (for date of concurrent solidi issue). Dark brown and green patina with some red, some minor cleaning/smoothing scratches. Good VF. Extremely rare and presently unique. None others in CoinArchives.

It is likely that this coin is a bronze issue struck alongside the rare Depeyrot 25/1 and 26/1-2 gold solidi issues. Despite the error in the reverse legend, the style is consistent enough with the RIC IX 40 coin (e.g. Glendining, 15 July 1929), lot 1023.

Pearl-diademed and draped bust right, wearing earring and necklace / Cross within wreath; CONOB*. RIC X 281 (Theodosius II; wreath ties 8); Depeyrot 72/2. Toned with some underlying luster, thin obverse die break and small reverse die mark, graffiti. Good VF. Depeyrot does not distinguish between the differences in wreath dies as Kent does in RIC X for the Eudocia tremisses. However, the examples from Kent’s wreath ties 8 are significantly scarcer than the more prevalently encountered RIC X 335.
