Burgred, King of Mercia (852-874), son-in-law of King Aethelwulf of Wessex, faced internal rebellions, raids by the Welsh, and the invasion of the Viking Great Army in 867. He was rescued by his brother-in-law Aethelred I of Wessex. In 874, Burgred, driven into exile by the Vikings, abdicated and retired to Rome. His successor Ceolwulf agreed to partition the kingdom with the Viking invaders. Descripción
