Extremadamente rara, pobablemente uno de los 6 o 7 ejemplares conocidos. (Ver otras adjuicaciones de ejemplares del mismo tipo, Lanz 148 (4 enero 2010), lote 167; Gemini IX (8 enero 2012), lote 528; y CNG Triton XX (enero 2017). EBC+. Est...25000,00. Hasta hace unos años, sólo se conocían monedas de bronce acuñadas por Justiniano I en la ceca de Alejandría. Se conocen contados ejemplares de como éste sólido de oro con la marca en exergo ALEXA OB (el OB significa "obrizium" u "oro puro"). Alejandría (y Egipto) había permanecido bajo el dominio romano oriental a pesar de la pérdida del oeste de África del Norte en el año 429 d. Sin embargo, la esta ceca cesó sus operaciones desde mediados del siglo V a.C. hasta que fue reabierta por Justiniano I (517-527 d.C); desde entonces hasta las conquistas árabes su principal producto fue una serie de monedas de bronce. Hasta el nuevo descubrimiento, se sabía que las monedas de oro habían sido alcanzadas en Alejandría solo por Justiniano II (565-578 dC) y durante la rebelión de Heraclio (608-610 dC), ambos tipos de rareza extrema. Esta pieza descubierta de Justiniano I tiene un considerable interés numismático, siendo de un estilo extremadamente bueno, en muchos sentidos superior al producto de las acuñaciones de Constantinopla. Hasta la fecha, solo se han ofrecido en subasta otros seis o siete ejemplares de esta importante pieza.

Helmeted and draped Justinian, holding spear over his right shoulder and shield over his left. Rev.: VICTORIA AVGGG / ALEXAOB. Victory standing facing, holding long cross in right hand and globus cruciger in left; in field, eight-pointed star. Au. 4.42 g. Hints of original mint luster. Extremely rare, probably one of the 6 or 7 known specimens. (See other awarded pieces of the same type, Lanz 148 (January 4, 2010), lot 167; Gemini IX (January 8, 2012), lot 528; and CNG Triton XX (January 2017)). EBC+. Until a few years ago, only bronze coins minted by Justinian I in the mint of Alexandria were known. Limited specimens are known like this solidus of gold with the mark in exergue ALEXA OB (OB means "obrizium" or "pure gold"). Alexandria (and Egypt) had remained under the Eastern Roman control despite the loss of the west of North Africa in 429 AD. Nevertheless, this mint ceased its operations from the middle of the V century BC till it was reopened by Justinian I (517-527 AD); from then till the Arab conquests, its main product was a series of bronze coins. Until the new discovery, it was known that gold coins had been minted in Alexandria only by Justinian II (565-578 AD) and during the rebellion of Heraclius (608-610 AD). This discovered piece of Justinian I has a considerable numismatic interest, being of an extremely good style, in many ways superior to the product of the Constantinople coinage. To date, only six or seven pieces of this important type have been offered at auction. Description
