Demetrio I (337 a. C. - 283 a. C.), llamado Demetrio Poliorcetes (Πολιορκητής) "el Asediador de ciudades", rey de Macedonia (294 a. C. - 288 a.C.). Hijo de Antígono Monoftalmos, uno de los generales llamados diádocos (Διάδοχοι) ‘sucesores’, que a la muerte de Alejandro Magno se hizo con el mando de casi todo el imperio macedónico. Padre e hijo fueron los principales instigadores y participantes en las guerras y peleas que hubo a raíz de la muerte de Alejandro. El sobrenombre de Poliorcetes se le adjudicó por contraposición al dios Zeus, protector y conservador de ciudades. La estátera que presentamos, del tipo de Alejandro III, probablemente fue acuñada en Pela hacia 293 a.C. Presenta, en anverso, la cabeza de Atenea a derecha, con casco corintio con cresta, decorado con serpiente. Y, en rev. el nombre del rey, en vertical: ΔHMHTPIOY, Nike de pie a la izquierda, sosteniendo corona de flores con la mano derecha extendida y tridente con el brazo izquierdo y monograma a la izquierda. Una estátera similar, de conservación más baja, fue subastada en el 2014 en 32.500 US$: “Classical Numismatic Group, Inc. Subasta Triton XVII, 7 de enero de 2014, lote 163”.

Son of Antigono Monoftalmos, one of the generals called diádocos (Διάδοχοι) 'successors', who at the death of Alexander III “the Great” took control of almost the entire Macedonian empire. Father and son were the main instigators and participants in the wars and fights that happened following the death of Alexander III. The nickname of Poliorketes was awarded to him in opposition to the god Zeus, protector and conservator of cities. The stater we present, of the Alexander III type, was probably struck in Pella around 293 a.C.
