Obverse field: without the name of the heir Abu'l-'Abbas (who is normally cited on dinars of this date). Lloyd, Fourth Century Gold Coinage of Sistan 1 (this piece cited); Bernardi 237Of (this piece cited); Album 245.1. VF. Excessively rare. Ex Spink Zurich 22 (17 March 1987), lot 414.The province of Sijistan fell to the Samanids in AH 298, when they defeated the last of the Saffarids and captured the cities of Bust and Zaranj. But the assassination of the Samanid ruler Ahmad b. Isma'il in AH 301 left a power vacuum in the region, and the caliph al-Muqtadir took advantage of this to send two commanders to re-establish 'Abbasid control in the region. 'Abbasid dinars from Zaranj were therefore struck in the year AH 302, and these coins are the only 'Abbasid gold issues known from Sijistan.

Unpubished. Numerous surface marks. Fine. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished and believed unique. The handsome calligraphy on this piece, including the pronounced upward loop on the 'm' of 'Muqtadir', is paralleled on a struck half-dirham published by Ilisch (D III 17).

Obverse: Eagle standing right with curved beak, wings spread / Reverse: Zebu kneeling left. Some deposit. VF. Extremely rare and apparently unpublished. The animal on the reverse of this anepigraphic medallion appears to be a zebu, identifiable by the distinctive hump on its back and dewlap on its neck. The zebu is depicted on silver donative issues of al-Muqtadir (Ilisch B I 1-4) and al-Muti' (Ilisch B I 5). The medallion itself appears to weigh approximately two dirhams.

Obverse field: letter sin / la ilaha illa Allah / wahdahu la sharik lahu / Abu'l-Hasan Muhammad / ibn amir al-mu'minin / Reverse field: lillah / Muhammad rasul / Allah salla Allah / 'alayhi wa salam / Imam al-Haqq / al-Mustakfi billah. Bernardi 338Jh. Superb EF, lustrous. Extremely rare. This is the last 'Abbasid gold coin struck before the Buwayhids occupied Baghdad. Al-Mustakfi had little choice but to recognise the Buwayhids' authority, but was nevertheless deposed and blinded, spending the remaining of his life as a prisoner in the caliphal palace. The Buwayhids replaced him with their puppet al-Muti', although al-Mustakfi was still acknowledged on coins struck by the Samanids, rivals of the Buwayhids, until his death.
