Pre-reform issues Category
Pre-reform issues, Eastern Sistan. Anonymous. Circa AH 80s-130s / AD 700s-750s. AR Drachm (30.7mm, 3.91 g, 5h). SK (Sistan) mint. Dated AH 87 (AD 705/6). Obverse margin: - / bismillah / rabbi / - / Reverse margin: - / 'Abd / - / -. Cf. Malek, Arab-Sasanian 1076 (without 'Abd in reverse margin); cf. CNG Islamic Auction 1 (25 May 2022), lot 52. Near EF. Rare. It has been suggested that 'Abd in the reverse margin refers to 'Abd al-Rabba b. 'Abdallah, sub-governor in Sistan under Qutayba b. Muslim. Qutayba did not place his own name on the drachm coinage, but it is recorded that he appointed 'Abd al-Rabba b. 'Abdallah as his sub-governor in Sistan in AH 87 before dismissing him in favour of Nu'man b. 'Awf during the year AH 88. The name of 'Abd is placed in the reverse margin rather than on the obverse, as befitting his status as a sub-governor. Drachms with the addition of 'Abd are also known dated AH 88 (Malek, Arab-Sasanian 1077) Description
