MACEDON, Chalkidian League. Circa 425-390 BC. AR Trihemiobol (8.5mm, 0.34 g, 12h). Reduced standard. Olynthos mint. Laureate head of Apollo left / Laurel branch within incuse square. Psoma, Monnaies, p. 103; Robinson & Clement Type 2 (Trieros); HGC 3, 507. Toned, porous, small edge chip, area of flat strike on reverse. VF. From the Ulysses Collection.Until recently, because of the legend TRIH on the reverse, this tiny fraction was thought to have been struck at a mint in Trieros in Thrace. However, Psoma has convincingly argued that the inscription is in reference to the denomination, a trihemiobol, and placed its manufacture at Olynthos during the period of the Chalkidian League. There is an accompanying diobol with the legend ΔIOB on the reverse.
