ARMENIA, Cilician Armenia. Royal. Hetoum I. 1226-1270. AR Tram (23mm, 2.50 g, 11h). Citing the Seljuk of Rum Kayqubad I. Hetoum on horseback riding right, head facing, holding lis-tipped scepter and reins; cross to left / Name and title of ruler Kayqubad I; star in field. AC 316. Porous and pitted. Near VF. The Armenian bi-lingual coinage was the product of a 1228 peace treaty wherein Hetoum acknowledged the Seljuq sultans of Konya as overlords in return for the cessation of attacks on Armenian territory. Hetoum abrogated the treaty in 1245 upon the death of Kaykhusraw, when he made another agreement with the emergent Mongol empire. In any case, the Seljuqs were pushed aside by the Mamluqs expanding out of Egypt, and when they attacked Armenia in 1266, the Mongols provided little assistance to Hetoum, who abdicated in favor of his son in 1270.

ARABIA, Philippopolis. Divus Julius Marinus. Died before AD 244. Æ (23mm, 6.66 g, 12h). Antioch mint. Struck under Philip I, circa AD 247-249. Bareheaded bust of Julius Marinus right, slight drapery on far shoulder, supported by eagle standing right with displayed wings / Roma or Allat standing left, holding patera and spear, with shield at side; S C across field. Butcher, Two, pl. 25, 11; Spijkerman 2; RPC VIII Online 2243; Sofaer 2. Brown patina, light porosity. VF. From the S&S Collection. The father of Philip I, Julius Marinus hailed from a small town in the province of Arabia (modern day Shuhba, Syria; the original name of the ancient town is unknown). Following the death of Marinus, Philip deified his father and had a temple to him built in his newly aggrandized hometown – now renamed Philippopolis and elevated to the rank of colonia. The neat fabric of the city's coins is quite out of place for Arabia. This, combined with die links between the coins of Philippopolis, Zeugma, and Antioch, point to production at a central location, with Antioch being the likeliest candidate.
