Helmeted head of Athena left, helmet decorated with sphinx; monogram behind neck guard / Lion standing left, devouring prey; [control mark between legs?]. Williams +384.26 (same obv. die); HN Italy 1296. Lightly toned, rough surfaces, numerous scratches, old filing on edge. Good Fine. From the Collection of a Well Known Author. The coin referenced in Williams, above, is placed in a category of "Plated or suspected plated" coins, but there is no indication of the present coin being plated. Further, for his coin +384.26, Williams regards the obverse as being an imitation of his die O181, but again, this would only be valid if the issue were fourrée; the characteristics of the present coin is indistinguishable from that of coins that are unquestionably official issues.
