Under the direction of Commodore Nathanial Dance, the Company's lightly armed, merchant convoy was able to drive off the French squadron, an unlikely turn of events for which Dance was handsomely rewarded. The Commodore was knighted on his return to England, and retired comfortably before passing at the age of 78 in 1827.
