temp. HANOVER. Field-marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. 1769-1852. Æ Medal (60.5mm, 129.9 g, 12h). By B. Pistrucci. Dated 1841. FIELD MARSHAL ARTHUR DUKE OF WELLINGTON, bare head left; PISTRUCCI below / NOVA CANTAMVS TROPÆA, crested Corinthian helmet right, decorated with various mythological scenes: upper half, soldier advancing right, carrying off fellow soldier; Hercules advancing right, holding club and wearing lion skin, being led by Athena to right; lower half, lion crouching left; soldier astride seahorse right, holding trophy; thunderbolt below, PISTRUCCI to lower left; AVGVST. 1841 in exergue. BHM 2011; Eimer 1353. Superb EF.From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection. The meaning of the imagery depicted upon the helmet of this medal remains a mystery. A possible explanation would be that the helmet is in fact that which is worn by Britannia herself, with ornamentation representing Britain's history along with more recent military exploits (nova cantamus tropæa). On the bottom half, both the lion and the soldier astride the seahorse are emblematic of Britain, as the former is the national symbol, whereas the latter may well refer to British dominion of the seas. On the upper half, British aid to wounded Europe during the Napoleonic Wars may be represented by the two soldiers, while Athena guiding Hercules may symbolize the defeat of Napoleon as a Herculean effort by the allies.

Burns, Commemoration 2a2; BHM –; Eimer 1941Ab; cf. Kienast 156 (for prototype). EF, dark gray surfaces. A popular type, this is the version copied for Britain in order to raise funds for St. Dunstan's and other war charities. From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection.Entering passenger service with the Cunard Line in 1907, the Lusitania continued the line's heavily-traveled service between Liverpool and New York City. After the outbreak of World War I, however, relations between Great Britain and Germany diminished, as the two became enemies within the conflict. This lead to Germany's declaration of submarine warfare upon the British Isles and a 'no-sail zone' for any vessel flying the British flag. On 7 May 1915, the Lusitania was identified by a German U-Boat, torpedoed, and sank in 18 minutes, killing over 60% of the passengers. The vessel went down 11 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland, and instantly became an iconic symbol for American involvement into the now global conflict.Satirical German medallist Karl Goetz made the original medal concerning this event, but widespread attention from the British audience demanded a further supply of the medal, resulting in a copy such as this example. Though grim and gruesome from a British (and to a smaller degree, American) perspective, these medals were popular and desired for the memory of the liner and her ill-fated passengers. The copies were produced with the proceeds benefitting various charities.
