TROAS, Kolone(?). 5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (7mm, 0.42 g). Helmeted head (of Athena?) right / Stellate pattern within linear square within incuse square. Cf. CNG E-356, lot 123; cf. CNG E-311, lot 832; cf. Gorny & Mosch 212, lot 1769; cf. Pecunem 8, lot 134; otherwise unpublished in the standard references. Fine, toned, some porosity, minor deposits on the reverse. Many of the towns of the Troad struck small silver fractions over the course of the fifth century BC. Although many of these were anepigraphic, the types used were common to each city, allowing plausible attribution by numismatists. The style and fabric of this type is consistent with these issues, allowing confident attribution to one of the region's mints. Although Kolone is only known to have issued bronze coins in the 4th century, these bronzes consistently featured the helmeted head of Athena on the obverse and a stellate pattern on the reverse. Thus, the attribution of this issue at Kolone in the 5th century is very likely.
