Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.02 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 204. Laureate head right / Dea Caelestis riding lion right, head right, holding thunderbolt and scepter; below, water gushing right from rocks. RIC IV 266; RSC 222. Good VF, toned, a few minor deposits. The INDVLGENTIA type of Septimius is one of the most picturesque and also one of the most common (in silver) of the period. Most people do not realize, however, that there are four distinct reverse types: 1) Dea Caelestis, looking to front, riding a lion leaping to the right, holding a thunderbolt and scepter; 2) Dea Caelestis, looking right, riding a lion leaping to the right, holding a thunderbolt and scepter; 3) Dea Caelestis, looking to front, riding a lion leaping to the right, holding a drum and scepter; 4) Dea Caelestis, looking to front, riding a lion leaping to the right, holding a drum, no scepter. The first two varieties are the most common. The third variety is very rare. The last variety is extremely rare. Similar types were also struck in the name of Caracalla in AD 203. Interestingly, the direction of the deity's head appears to have a chronological significance. An examination of the dated bronze and gold reveals that the examples with the deity's head facing were struck late in 203, while those with the head facing right were struck early in 204. Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. AR Denarius (19mm, 3.31 g, 6h). British Victory issue. Rome mint. Struck AD 210-211. Laureate head right / VICTORIAE BRIT, Victory seated left on shield, holding shield and palm frond. RIC IV 335; RSC 731. VF, lightly toned.Septimius Severus waged his last military campaign against the Caledonians on the northern border of Britain, where he himself died at his campaign headquarters at York in February AD 211. Among those who accompanied him on the campaign were his wife Julia Domna, as well as his sons Caracalla and Geta. Septimius and Caracalla commanded this campaign, with Caracalla becoming sole commander after his father had fallen ill. The two often did not agree on matters of strategy and we are told that at one point that Caracalla became so enraged that he appeared ready to stab his father in the back before the entire army. Upon Severus' death at York in February AD 211, Caracalla made peace with the Caledonians on less-than-favorable terms, which required the Romans retreat to the agreed border of Hadrian's Wall Description
