ELAGABALUS (218-222). Denarius. Antioch.

Obv: ANTONINVS PIVS FEL AVG.
Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Rev: SANCT DEO SOLI ELAGABAL.
Quadriga right bearing stone of Emesa upon which is an eagle; four parasols around.

RIC 195.

Varus Avitus Bassianus, son of Julia Soemia, besides being emperor was a priest of the sun god El-Gabal of Emesa, current Homs in Syria. In 218, thanks to the clever machinations of his grandmother Julia Maesa and the large sums of money she paid to the soldiers, Bassianus was appointed emperor under the name Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, the same as Caracalla. This was not a random choice, for the late prince was very dear to the hearts of his soldiers and, more generally, the Antonine name was well liked by the Romans. Of course, Bassianus would have had no right to bear it if the wily Mesa had not spread the false rumor that he was Caracalla's son. According to the senatorial literature, ill-disposed toward authoritarian rulers, Bassianus was the worst emperor Rome had ever had. His biography, written by Aelius Lampridius, which describes him as the most vicious and perverse emperor ever, is certainly exaggerated. Bassianus, however, was unable to integrate himself into Rome and imposed his lifestyle and absolutist conception of power. As high priest of the god El-Gabal, he tried to impose his cult on Rome, claiming to put him in the place of Jupiter and going so far as to celebrate the divine wedding between the god and Minerva. El-Gabal was represented as a black cone, most likely a meteorite. Rome was forced to accommodate that cult and build for El-Gabal a sumptuous temple on the Palatine, the Elagabalium. It was because of this inconvenient cult that Bassianus was called "Elagabalus" by all. According to the historian Herodian, during the festival in honor of El-Gabal, the emperor as a priest had the statue of the god placed on a chariot of gold and precious stones and, with the help of white horses, led it forward on foot and holding the reins, as if the god himself were driving the chariot. The chariot was preceded by horsemen and soldiers during the procession, while the people threw garlands and flowers.

VALENS (364-378). GOLD Solidus. Treveri.

Obv: D N VALENS P F AVG.
Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Rev: VICTORIA AVGG / TROBS.
Two emperors seated facing on double throne, holding globus between them; behind and between, Victory standing front with outspread wings, palm frond below.

RIC 39b.2; Depeyrot 43/2.

Flavius Julius Valens was the younger brother of Valentinian I. After serving as protector domesticus (personal guard) of Julian II and Jovian, he immediately became emperor of the East in 364 thanks to his brother who was already Augustus of the West, although the two differed in faith. Valens in fact was an Arian, while Valentinian was a Nicene Christian. The first problem was presented by the usurper Procopius, comes of Antioch, who proclaimed himself Augustus of the East in 365. Valens defeated him, sentenced him to death and struck with damnatio memoriae. He later faced the Visigoths and a second conspiracy, hatched by Theodore of Antioch. In 374 Valens celebrated the decennalia and became Maximus Augustus in 375 on the death of his brother, after which he organized an expedition against the Persians that proved unsuccessful, forcing him to sign an unfavorable peace. Another problem was the confluence of Ostrogoths and Visigoths into Roman territory across the Danube because of the advance of the Huns. The Romans were forced to accept them, but this integration was not easy; the Visigoths felt oppressed and exploited as a labor-power, resulting in an insurrection. Valens, considered a general of little ability by his contemporaries, was thus induced to recruit Goth mercenaries, with the risk that they would end up allied with his enemies. In fact, a large contingent of Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Huns, and Alamanni joined forces to fight the Romans and achieved a decisive victory at Hadrianopolis (Thrace) in 378. The tremendous defeat was caused by Gratian, who was meanwhile on the Western throne and did not arrive in time with his troops. Valens died in the battle but the Goths failed to conquer Constantinople. According to Ambrose, bishop of Mediolanum, the defeat at Hadrianopolis heralded the fall of the empire and the end of the world.

SICILY. Entella. Punic issues (Circa 300-289 BC). Tetradrachm.

Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin.
Rev: Head of horse left; palm tree to right; Punic legend below.

Jenkins 342; CNP 272; HGC 2, 295.

The foundation of Entella is traced back to Acestes, son of the river god Krimisos and a Trojan woman or, according to other sources to Prince Elymus, son of Anchises and brother of Aeneas. The city stood on a summit overlooking the Belice valley. Records are scarce until the arrival of the Campanian mercenaries, recruited in 410 BC by the Carthaginians and discharged after the 405 BC treaty, then passed into the pay of Dionysius I of Syracuse. After liberating Dionysius on the island of Ortigia from the Punic siege, the were discharged with rich gifts and settled in various cities on the island. In 404 a group of these mercenaries seized Entella, exterminating the entire male population, and began to mint their own coinage. From then on they implemented a generally pro-Carthaginian policy and, in 398 B.C., were able to stop Syracusan siege attempts with the help of the Punic. The strategic location of the fortress of Entella was coveted for its control of the valley below, and this led to several siege attempts: in 345 it was attacked by the Carthaginians led by General Annon, then in 342 the city was taken by the Syracusans commanded by Timoleon, but in 338 it fell back under Punic influence. During the First Punic War the city was destroyed by the Carthaginians. The “Decrees of Entella,” which were requests for help engraved on bronze slabs, from the inhabitants to neighboring cities, date from this period. In 263 Entella was conquered by the Romans and enjoyed a new period of prosperity until the second century BC when it was abandoned.
