Rev: FECVNDITAS.
Terra reclining left below tree, elbow resting on basket of fruits; right hand resting on globus with three stars; behind, the four seasons as children.

RIC 549 (Septimius Severus).

The theme is meant to celebrate 'fecunditas' and Julia Domna's role as mother. Terra or Tellus for the Romans is Mother Earth, the source of nourishment for all living things. In the cult she was associated with Ceres, goddess of the harvest, and both were recognized as having a role in human generation and thus in controlling population growth. For this reason she was honored in marriages. Terra saw everything that happened on her surface and was called to witness in oaths. These attributes are well represented by the reverse of this coin, with the presence of the orb, children and the legend recalling fertility. Usually Terra is depicted as a woman lying on the ground, holding a cornucopia.
