EGYPT, Alexandria. Galerius. As Caesar, AD 293-305. Potin Tetradrachm (20mm, 8.19 g, 11h). Dated RY 3 (AD 294/5). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from the front / Draped bust of Hermes left, wearing winged taenia with lotus petals; to left, caduceus; L Γ (date) across field. Extremely rare, only four recorded in RPC.

From the Dr. Thomas E. Beniak Collection, purchased from Beast Coins, 5 May 2009. Ex Keith Emmett Collection, purchased from Aureus, August 1989.

The reverse of this coin was described by Emmett as “Draped bust of Hermes left, wearing polos on head, caduceus at left.” Hermes is traditionally seen wearing a winged petasos and the wings can clearly be seen on this coin, but the cap of the petasos is not visible; instead, the curls of his hair can be seen indicating the wings are attached to a taenia. The “polos” described by Emmett are actually lotus petals, confirmed by their presence on a couple of rare diobols of Commodus. This reverse type is unique to Galerius and currently only known from four specimens.
