EGYPT, Alexandria. Uncertain Emperor. 1st century AD. Æ Dichalkon (14mm, 1.94 g, 12h). ‘Coins probably incorrectly attributed to Caligula’. Dated RY 2 of an uncertain reign. Ibis standing left; to left, palm frond / Apis bull standing right wearing solar disk, crescent on his side; L B (date) above. Köln 3444; Dattari (Savio) 112; K&G A.3; RPC I 5112; Emmett 4257.2. Brown patina, slight roughness. VF.

From the Dr. Thomas E. Beniak Collection. Ex Künker 89 (8 March 2004), lot 1772.

Previously attributed to Gaius Caligula, now uncertain. There is a note on the Künker listing stating that this coin must have been struck under Hadrian since only he struck the Apis bull reverse in year two. That is incorrect, the type was also struck by Claudius in that regnal year, and neither issued the type as dichalkoi. The Apis bull was a popular type until the Antonine period, with the last dichalkon of the type having been struck by Antoninus Pius.
