Only one series of portrait coins was struck for Caligula when he and Tiberius Gemellus, the alleged grandson of Tiberius, were heirs-apparent to the throne. During this period, both young men were residing with Tiberius on Capri. Not only did they have to contend with the cruelties recorded by Seutonius, but they were aware that only one of them could rise to the purple after Tiberius’ death.

IBERIA, Romula. Divus Augustus, with Julia Augusta (Livia). Died AD 14. Æ Dupondius (31mm, 24.15 g, 6h). Struck under Tiberius, AD 14-37. Radiate head of Divus Augustus right; star above, thunderbolt before / Head of Livia left, set on globe; crescent above. ACIP 3360; RPC I 73; Burgos 2014. From the CLA Collection. Ex CNG inventory 730556 (April 2002).

The style of the obverse is identical to an as struck in Rome, and dated to 15-16 AD (RIC I 72 [Tiberius]). The reverse demonstrates the development of the Julio-Claudian dynastic in the early years of Tiberius' reign. The portrait of Livia, known as Julia Augusta by the dictates of Augustus' will, demonstrates an increased divine association of the dowager empress; the crescent consciously parallels the star above the head of the Divus Augustus. The legend formula is apparently unknown elsewhere. The phrase genetrix orbis may allude to Venus Genetrix, the divine ancestress of the gens Iulia as well as mater or parens patriae, titles which the Senate bestowed on Livia.

Perinthus apparently put on a grand display for Caracalla as the emperor made his way eastward to confront the Persians. The city staged a dual festival, hosting both Actian and Pythian Games for the visitors, and in recognition of the honor Caracalla bestowed upon the city the neocorate. Medallions were struck to celebrate the emperor’s visit, of which many share the same obverse die.

For his Third Labor, Herakles was required to capture the Cerynean Hind, with its brazen hooves and golden horns, alive and bring it from Oenoe to Mycenae. Herakles chased the stag for one full year before it finally tired, finally capturing it.
