Libius Severus (Severus III). AD 461-465. Æ (9.5mm, 1.30 g, 6h). Rome mint. Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Monogram of Ricimer within wreath; RM. RIC X 2715 var. (mint mark). Brown and green patina. Good Fine. Very rare and exceptional with the Rome mint mark visible.

From the Bernard Victory Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 45 (18 March 1998), lot 2416.

RIC X 2715-7 are usually attributed to either Libius Severus or to Ricimer himself at an uncertain military mint. It is, however, highly unlikely that Ricimer would continue to use the portrait of Liberius Severus following Severus’ death. More likely, is that this issue of Severus utilizes the Ricimer monogram for purposes not definitely known. It is additionally far more likely that this monogram is in fact a Ricimer monogram rather than the other proffered suggestions which include a tenuous reading of ROMAE. This coin is exceptional in that it does indeed bear the RM mint mark, though with a good two-thirds of it off flan. Thankfully enough is visible to make the reading definitive. Thus, the series does seem most likely to belong to the Rome mint under Severus as suggested by Kent. However, Kent’s attempt to avoid reading the monogram as belonging to Ricimer seems inadvisable.
