Many Hawaiian plantations used numbered tags (bango in Japanese) to track their workers. Many of the workers were Japanese or other immigrants, and the experience, while convenient for administration, must have been dehumanizing.
Established in 1909, the Maui Pineapple Company was a major producer of the fruit until they closed in 2009, unable to match the lower labor costs in foreign markets. Description
