Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (23.5mm, 3.27 g, 8h). ‘C’ mint (?). IMP C CARAVSIVS AVG, radiate and draped bust right / [VICTOR]I A AVGGG, Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm frond; [S]|P//[C] (?). RIC V –; Bourne – but cf. 144 and 162 (for similar reverses). Dark green and brown patina, some roughness, minor scratches. VF. Extremely rare. Seemingly a new type for the issues ending in ‘GGG.’ Overstruck on a MARTI PACIF(ERO) type of Carausius with MART I and Mars’ hand holding the olive branch visible to the left on the reverse.
From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection. Ex Roma XIII (23 March 2017), lot 1176.
A very interesting reverse type to find on the issues citing Diocletian and Maximianus. The Victory right type was formerly only known for the Fratres Svi issues
