Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, Berenike II (wife of Ptolemy III) Æ Dichalkon(?). Heraklea by the sea or Seleukeia in Pieria, after circa 261 BC. BAΣ[IΛIΣΣHΣ] BEPENIKHΣ, diademed and draped bust to right / [ΠTOΛEMAIOY] BAΣ[IΛEΩΣ], eagle with open wings standing to left on thunderbolt; EY to left; c/m: two grain kernels in circle. CPE B462A; Svoronos 1056; Weiser -; SNG Copenhagen -. 3.66g, 17mm, 11h.

Very Fine. Extremely Rare example, overstruck on a Seleukid host of Apollo on omphalos type.

CPE cites one other example (from the same collection as this current piece) which is overstruck on a Seleukid type. From that specimen Lorber was able to suggest a potential dating of after 261 BC for the Berenike coinage based on the condition of the undertype which had clearly circulated for a time before being overstruck.

A group of coins have been linked together on the PtolemAE Project site due to the double eagle on the reverse, stylistic similarities, their peculiar 'knife-edge' fabric and the variety of symbols present on the reverse. They have been dated to the time of Ptolemy IX-X, in part, since the two rulers are known to have utilised a large number of unusual symbols in a short time.
