The sea turtle, as depicted here, symbolised the naval strength of the island of Aegina and was depicted on the coins issued there from the earliest issues in the 6th century BC until the early fourth century. However, after losing her maritime power, the sea turtle was replaced as the predominate type by the land dwelling tortoise.
