Before a special need a special currency. Generally minted for warlike causes but also in the face of epidemics or other types of catastrophes, the obsidional or emergency currency, with a crude and simple appearance, fulfills a fundamental function in times of battered economies since they come to replace the lack of money produced, either by hoarding of it or scarcity. In general, they were pieces minted under a local authority and therefore their validity was limited to a province or municipality. It was, in addition, in the case of silver coins, a coin made with material requisitioned both from individuals and from institutions such as the Church.

After declaring war against England in 1796 and for which an attack on the Port of Veracruz was feared, the viceroy of New Spain, the Marquis of Branciforte, decided that Orizaba would temporarily become the capital of the Viceroyalty. Orizaba, became the capital, then, between 1797 and 1798, another privilege that joins the one that Carlos III granted it a few years before in January 1774 when giving it the category of town.
