After declaring war against England in 1796 and for which an attack on the Port of Veracruz was feared, the viceroy of New Spain, the Marquis of Branciforte, decided that Orizaba would temporarily become the capital of the Viceroyalty. Orizaba, became the capital, then, between 1797 and 1798, another privilege that joins the one that Carlos III granted it a few years before in January 1774 when giving it the category of town.
