Work of the architect Jeroni Granell, the library was built between 1882 and 1884 with the intention of being a place of multidisciplinary learning, open and without exclusion to any type of citizen. It is therefore the clearest and probably the first example of a Catalan public library. Among its first collections, it is worth highlighting a good number of contributions made by the founder himself, Víctor Balaguer, a distinguished Spanish writer, journalist and politician and one of the leading figures of the so-called \u201cRenaixenca\u201d.
